Email is awesome. It helps us communicate efficiently, and you don’t have to make a dreaded phone call. I’m talking to you millennials. So don’t make it a miserable thing. Don’t be that person that complains about their inbox.
If you’re inbox is scary, fix it! Here’s a few tips to help you simplify your inbox.
Unsubscribe from EVERYTHING.
We all get sucked into subscribing to emails over time. You may even subscribe to ours (hint, hint). Whether it’s retail or tips, or something you had to enter your to “win,” you likely don’t need it. Take a scan through your inbox and start decluttering. What do you need? What do you skim over without opening every day anyway? What bugs you everyday?
If there was a file system in your office would you just toss your paperwork all over the floor and walk away? So why the heck are you making a mess of your inbox? Use the folders already. It’s not like it’s even hard. Create a folder, then file. You seriously can’t mess it up. PS. Don’t over file. You don’t need a separate folder for every individual email. Come on people, we can do this.
Use Boomerang to do the heavy lifting.
The optimal time to send an email isn’t always when we have time to write it. Boomerang is a gmail extension that gives you way more email flexibility. Write an email now, then schedule to send it later. Schedule an email reminder to appear when you need to finish a task later. Get reminders when you haven’t heard back. Let technology make your inbox situation a little less hairy.
Delete, delete, delete.
What are you saving all those emails you didn’t even care enough to open for? Don’t be an email hoarder. It’s not cute, and it will drive you nuts. Pull the trigger and start deleting them. If it’s super important, put it in a folder. Otherwise, there’s no sense in saving every email you’ve ever received. When you’re actually looking for one, it will be that much harder to find.
Email should make you happy, not scared. Start making you inbox work for you with the simple tips above.
